In the 1900's Phoebe Snow was the advertising mascot of the Lackawanna Railroad
advertisement campaign by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad
company called The Road of Anthracite which emphasized the use of clean-burning
anthracite coal over its competitors.
Anthracite Coal, the richest coal in the world, was mined in the northeast regions of PA.
Phoebe Snow
was often played by a popular actress to illustrate the clean journey
provided by Lackawanna trains.
