I'm very proud of my Civil War heritage. My grandfather Samuel J. Martin, a union soldier, served in 21 battles. His Honorable Discharge paper reads:
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT SAMUEL J. MARTIN- Enlisted from Lycoming County Penna. and was mustered into the US Service in Harrisburg PA on June 20th 1861 to serve three years as a Private in Company F 11th Regiment Penna. Res. Vol. Infantry under Captains S. Bierer, J A Hayden, Cols. Thomas F Gallagher, and SM Jackson.
The regiment was assigned to the 2nd and 3rd Brig Reserve Corps Army of the Potomac and participated in the following engagements.
Dranesville Dec. 20, 1861 Mechanicsville June 26, 1861 Gains Mills June 27, 1862 Chas City Crop Rows June 28, 1862 2nd Bull Run August 30, 1862 South Mountain Sept. 14, 1862 Antientam Sept. 17, 1862 Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862 Mud March Jan. 1863 Gettysburg July 13, 1863 Bristo Sta Oct. 14, 1863 Wilderny May 7, 1864 Spottsylvania May 8, 1864 Noranna May 20-27, 1864 Berhesda Church June 6, 1864
Honorably discharged June 13, 1864 at Harrisburg on expiration of term.
Reentered the US Service on August 24, 1864 as a Private in Company B 210 Regiment Penna. Vol.Infantry for one year, during the war under Capt. John A Hughes and Col. EOL Wixman. The regiment was assigned to the 3rd Brig 2nd Division and 5th Corps Army of the Potomac.
He was promoted Quarter Master Sergeant. Engaged at Watchers Run Oct. 27-28, 1864, Held on RR Dec. 7, 1864 was wounded here by a piece of shell casing causing lop of three 1st fingers of left hand and was sent to hospital at Phila. Pena. then sent to Washington DC, then back to Philadelphia, Penna.
Regiment engaged at Dabneys Mills Feb. 7, 1865 Gravelly Run March 28-29, 1865 Boyotin Road March 31, 1865 Five Forks April 1, 1865 Apponattox APLG as the Rebel General Lee surrender with the whole army of Virginia.
Honorably Discharged May 30, 1865 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by reason of close of war.
Samuel J. Martin married Hannah Sneider. He was moved to the cemetery at Gettysburg. Honorably discharged May 30, 1865 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania as a Quarter Master Sergeant.
